Gupt Godavari is an intriguing site, both a natural wonder and a place of immense spiritual significance. Legend has it that Goddess Godavari came secretly to Chitrakoot to visit Shri Rama. She journeyed from Tryambakeshwar in Nasik, Maharashtra, emerging from a cave, flowing into a pond, and then vanishing, hence earning the name Gupt Godavari.

Located 18 km from the district of Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh, this place is believed to have been home to Shri Ram, Devi Sita, and Lakshman for a few years during their exile. The site features two cave systems within the mountain, both containing knee-deep water.

One cave is high and wide with a narrow entrance, allowing only one person at a time. Inside, a stream of water flows continuously from deep rocks. Exiting this cave, you encounter a remarkable Panchmukhi Shivalinga depicting the holy trinity – Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The second cave has a wider entrance, with water trickling down from above. As you traverse the rocky trail inside, the water disappears into crevices, following its secret, underground path through the mountains.

The larger of these caves also houses two stone-carved thrones believed to belong to Lord Rama and Lord Lakshman. However, the highlight of visiting Gupt Godavari is the Ram Darbar temple inside the cave. Here, statues of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshman are seated on a raised platform in a courtyard. Sunlight filters through an opening directly above, adding to the mystical ambiance of this sacred place.
