Pointing The Not-So-Innocent Index Finger

We have heard it so many times from our elders…to not point with the index finger. Is it just because it is considered impolite or is there more to why it is impolite? Let’s find out.

Our body is made up of five elements – earth, water, fire, air and ether. Interestingly these elements can be controlled and altered with our fingertips, using the science of mudras. The index finger controls the air element in the body, the element which is the cause of two thirds of diseases in the body as per Ayurveda, given its mobile nature. Hence it needs to be used with care.

TIW AD

One usually points with the index finger while scolding or accusing someone or when trying hard to impose their thoughts on a person. It is a common observation that when this is done it creates irritation and restlessness in the listener. It is said of melons, that if you point the index finger at them…they rot. When you point at someone with your index finger you are directing the air element towards them and unconsciously or consciously creating a disturbance in them.

Hence the old saying, to not point with the index finger!
