Ashwagandha, literally translating as ‘the smell of horse’, is a rasayan known to confer strength and virility according to the ancient science of Ayurveda. It has been used since atleast 6000 BC in India, as an adaptogen, a herb that helps the body cope with various forms of stress as well as a nervine tonic to treat anxiety, depression, insomnia and even sexual dysfunction.

Recently the herb has also found application in treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and other neurodegenerative diseases owing to its ability to “reverse or remove neurotic atrophy and synaptic loss,” as brought out in a 2011 study published in NCBI’s African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines.

It was known to our rishis from time immortal that sukra is the basis of life. So celibacy is practiced along with taking Ashwagandha as it increases the sukra (sukravardhak) of the body and signs of ageing are dispelled.

Given below are some traditional preparations for you to experience the magic of this herb,

  • A teaspoon of the powdered root, boiled in milk can be consumed with honey for reducing stress and increasing energy levels and vitality. This concoction will help reduce chances of stress-induced problems.
  • Boil a teaspoon of the Ashwagandha root powder or cut up pieces of the dried root in water for 5-7 minutes. Cool and consume with a few drops of honey. This concoction helps improve sexual health and reduce anxiety.
  • Ashwagandha root powder can be consumed daily with a glass of warm water in the morning to treat arthritis.
  • Powdered Ashwagandha leaves mixed with water or organic oils can be applied to treat injuries and various skin disorders. It also helps restore dry skin.
