Say No To Ticks

Ticks look like spiders and infest the fur of animals like dogs, particularly in the summer and monsoon months. Chemical-laced lotions and creams that are available in markets may cause problems and sickness to your pet. And nothing is more upsetting than seeing your pet suffer.

Here are some tried and tested methods which are absolutely safe for these four-legged wonders called dogs.

TIW AD

CITRUS LOTIONS

Take out peels of lemon or orange and put them to boil. Cool and pour the solution in a bottle. Spray it generously on your dog. Spray behind ears, on chin and neck (avoid the face). And don’t forget their beds. Cats don’t like the smell of citrus, hence don’t bother them with this.

COMBING

Comb your pet every day after it comes back from a walk. This is a sure shot trick. Combs sweep off ticks and prevents irritation. Regular combing also helps in prevention of hair loss.

NEEM OIL (DILUTED)

It is very important to dilute the neem oil or any essential oils, otherwise it burns the skin. Take one portion of neem oil and add 6-7 portions of lukewarm water. Mix well. Slowly bathe your pet with this water. Remember to avoid eyes. Neem is known for its anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. This may be used as a spray also.

REETHA/SOAP NUT

Reetha is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. It helps in hair growth and stops hair loss. It is a natural soap. Soak 4-5 balls of reetha overnight. Next day mash it, strain it and mix with few drops of neem oil. Bathe your pet thoroughly with this mixture. Neem oil with reetha will help lose those unwanted elements. Again keep it away from eyes, it may sting. For cats you may use only reetha water, as neem oil is not suitable for cats.

AROMATIC OILS

A few drops of aromatic oils like citronella, cinnamon, tea tree, clove oil etc. can be rubbed on the fur, or sprayed to keep the bugs away.

KEEP YOUR HOUSE TICK-FREE

Also it is essential to keep these ticks and bugs out of your home so that they don’t attack again and again. One may also dip the dog’s collar into these oil mixtures and tie them on their collar. These preventive sprays can be sprayed at the corners, on carpets, sofas, curtains, etc.

Take a muslin cloth bag, put some lavender buds or few cloves or few cinnamon sticks and peel of two lemons. Tie the mouth. Place this bag under your bed or near their bed, at the corners of your room. This will ward off the fleas and ticks. Change this mixture every month or when you feel the mixture has lost its potential. Regularly mop the floor with Dettol water or phenyl.

I would recommend to let the dogs sniff the scents and see how they react. Use only those which they like. It is estimated that dogs can identify scents 1,000-10,000 times better than humans. Imagine loathing the smell of something and then imagine it being rubbed all over you! Ugh!

Happy Petting.
